Language Arts
This course follows an integrated language arts approach to teaching the communication skills of listening, speaking, writing and reading. Instruction is literature-based with the integration of grammar and composition. Literature of all genres, the writing process, vocabulary study, grammar concepts, oral and silent reading, and formal/informal speaking skills are areas of emphasis. Developmental reading skills are taught and enriched. Students respond to what they read both orally and in writing. Activities to build writing skills are stressed.
8th Grade Mathematics
This course is designed to illustrate the connection between mathematics and its applications. Coursework will be given in the context of problem-solving and exploration. The relevance of mathematical concepts to a variety of areas is emphasized throughout this course. This includes exponents, functions, equations, linear equations, systems of equations, transformations, congruence and similarities.
Science
The middle school physical science course is designed to give students the necessary skills for a smooth transition from elementary physical science standards to high school physical science standards. The purpose is to give all students an overview of common strands in physical science including, but not limited to, the nature of matter, laws of energy, matter, motion and forces, and energy transformation.Georgia Department of Education (2006). Social Studies
Eighth grade social studies are centered around Georgia and the American Experience. Students are acquainted with major periods, events and key figures of Georgia history from colonization to the twentieth century.
